Garden Update - Part One

I'm sure y'all are going to be really tired of hearing about our garden in the next few months.  We're just so. damn. excited. about it!  I'm really kicking myself for not taking more 'before' pictures of the garden.  I do have one and it will give you a pretty good idea of what we were working with.  When we moved into our house last July, this was our garden:

It was basically just an overgrown mess!  We've put in many, many hours and will continue to put in many more.  But, for us, this is our happy place.

We started working and clearing things out last summer.  You wouldn't believe the mosquitos in there!  Here are a few progress photos from last summer:

As you can see, we had our work cut out for us!  And, although we made decent progress last summer, we still had/have a looooong way to go!

This past weekend Jason and I put in some long hours in the garden.  I had the oh-so-fun (NOT!) job of ripping up all of the carpet the previous owners had laid down.  There were layers and layers of carpet.  With grass, weeds and moss growing right through them.  I definitely earned a few beers that day!

Jason focused on making the garden "Oliver proof".  We needed a few more gates added in and a short wall of 6 foot fencing (which also fences in where the chickens will be).

He actually built two of the gates from things that we had on hand.  One was an old window left by the previous owners and the other was some leftover split rail fencing and an old trellis from the garden.  We love how they turned out!  Check them out here :)

We love using things that we have on hand in unusual ways!

Now, we are focusing on re-pathing (I just made that word up) the garden.  There were lots of paths through it, but we want just one all the way around.  More room for fruits, veggies, and herbs that way!  We're hoping to get that done this week so we can rototill this weekend.  It'll be time to start planting in a month!  Yay!!

Do you have a garden?  What are your favorite things to grow?

  1. What a HUGE garden you have - I love it! I wish I had a green thumb that could do something like that. I usually get a few flower pots and pray I don't kill them. I can't wait to see how it does this summer!
